Day One ~ In The Beginning

"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning."
                                                                                                                    Gospel of John 1:1,2

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
                                                                                                                    Gospel of John 1:14

What a strange way John has of introducing Jesus. Although he knew about the prophets of his Hebrew ancestors, John chose not to describe Jesus as a prophet. He made it clear that he was seeing something else, a different kind of relationship between Jesus and the Creator. To John, Jesus was more than a wise man guiding a group of people to their promised land. For this disciple, Jesus and God in some mysterious way are actually one entity.

It must be remembered that concepts like Homo sapiens, evolutionary catalyst and the ascent of humankind were not yet part of the vocabulary in John's day. Yet, John knew what he was seeing.
Jesus was proclaiming a message about our bestial nature that, if understood by the masses, could have powerful implications for the destiny of humankind.

How frustrating it must have been for John. He understood Jesus Christ to be a channel for transformation, an evolutionary impulse. He recognized Jesus as an adaptive act of the Almighty so to speak. And, he had to find a way to ensure that this insight would be communicated across time in spite of the limitations imposed by the language of his day.

Happy Holy Days 2015
